Many of us come to our current positions with a variety of skills.  Many skills come from life and career experiences, study qualifications, transferable soft skills or quantifiable hard skills – among many others.  Identifying what skills you have and applying them to a defined skill set framework could mean you could have potential accreditation in specific skills that could cross over to other fields of employment.  So, it’s well worth taking the time to find out if you have transferable or quantifiable skills to improve your employment attractiveness.

Skills sets are useful to persons with a specific job intelligence who want this knowledge transferred to another field.  Gaining skill set recognition highlights the education or experience you have.  This skill can potentially bridge the recognition void when moving into another work field.

There are 5 ways Skill Sets assist you:

  1. A skill sets offers you the opportunity to cross your skills from one job specific role to another.
  2. A skill set allows accreditation in other units or fields outside your scope of study.
  3. A skill sets makes qualifying for another field of study quicker. By reducing the time required to study, it saves you time in recognising your current skills from one field of study as they could be crossed over to another field.
  4. Skill sets also reduce the costs from the impact of time required to study further.
  5. Skills sets offer accreditation of one or more units of competency, without needing to complete the whole qualification.

At Southpac Aerospace we have many clients working in the aviation sector who have a variety of experience within job specific areas.  For example, an Operations Manager at an aerodrome could like their current job skills formally recognised to aid in achieving a successful career move toward a Safety Management role.

Like all qualifications offered by Southpac Aerospace, we utilise approved Skill Sets that an RTO may deliver based on its approved or ‘implicit’ scope of registration.  For more information on the Southpac Aerospace’s capacity to deliver Skill Sets, please go to the TGA website.

Determine your proficiency and capacity to achieve a competency in a skill set by compiling a list of your current skills in a matrix.  The diagram below is an example and is only indicative of one person’s skills, knowledge and interests.  Credit here for the original design layout.

Key | 1 = low interest and/or proficiency; 5 = high interest and/or proficiency.

               John Citizen
SKILL     Proficient         Interested
Risk management               2                         1
Human factors               3                         5
Auditing and assessment               3                         5

When creating the matrix, try to understand why you like or dislike a project.  Also, determine where your greatest skills lie through conversation with peers and management or HR.  Consider how these tie into your interests.

Skill sets incorporate your capacity, knowledge and experience in performing a particular job.  By improving your skill set/s, you may enhance your ability to identify new career opportunities.  By matching your skill set to a certain profession, you will enhance your ability to make positive progress in your career choices.  Southpac Aerospace has identified three skill sets that are automatically available to you on successful completion of the full Diploma of Aviation Management (AVI50616).
